In its heyday, the ancient city of Tyre was rich, notorious for its wickedness and idolatry. An economic powerhouse, even the 30 pieces of silver paid to Judas were likely Tyrian shekels. The people of Tyre became overly confident in their defenses and overly proud of their wealth and beauty. Jesus mentions Tyre as an example of an unrepentant city. Full of themselves, as it were. Eventually Tyre was destroyed, which at its peak, seemed impossible.
